Bowled over by the downturn

The Financial Review reports that ten pin bowling has become all the rage with employers looking to boost staff morale. Macquarie Leisure Trust and other centre owners report a big increase in corporate bookings. Good luck to them, but as threats to jobs, redundancies and apprehension surrounding superannuation intensifies is ten pin bowling as a diversion really the best strategy to boost staff morale?

Is now really the time to goof off?

The financial services industry has encountered unprecedented tough times since the emergence of the global economic crisis. Staff morale is under pressure but a better way to assuage anxiety it to educate staff. Now more than ever, financial education is a prudent and positive initiative that can engage and empower staff. The newspapers, net, radio and television supply an endless stream of bad economic news. And consider this -- it is quite likely that this is just the beginning. In the midst of the biggest economic challenge of our lifetime surely employers and HR personnel have more sophisticated strategies at their disposal beyond taking employee’s minds off the gloom and doom.

Knowledge is power

Money 101 subscribes to the belief that knowledge is power. The more empowered your staff feel the less likely they are to feel overwhelmed by circumstances out of their control. Individual employers and employee cannot fix the global credit crisis but there is much an individual can do to get his/ her own financial house in order to weather it successfully.

The goal of our financial literacy training is to work proactively with employers to provide relevant, accessible information that appeals to and engages adult learners. Your employees will gain the skills and knowledge to put negative media hype into perspective. You can still go bowling for your Christmas function – we all need to let our hair down occasionally and act like big kids. But in their quieter moments your employees will thank you for taking the time to also treat them as adults by providing financial literacy training.
